missing mails in POP account

missing mails in POP account

Answered (Not Verified)
  • I just upgraded yesterday from the BB Storm, and my IMAP gmail (personal) and Yahoo e-mails don't seem to be having a problem - however I'm missing e-mails on my TB from my business POP account. I seem to be getting most of them, but several are missing and I can't figure out why. As I run my business through my e-mail when I am traveling, this is important that I be responsive to customers.

I have made no changes to the POP account settings on any other clients (home PC). Any ideas?

    Thanks.

  • I take back the comment about yahoo mail. I had two mails come in last night from my yahoo account that show up when I check the web-mail, but do not appear on my TB.

    Ideas greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • It could be that the servers are not updating as quickly to the phone as to the computer, they may come in a bit later.

There are settings on the phone for updating or syncing, check here:

    Settings, accounts & sync

Here you will see your emails below, if you hold your finger on one of those for about 2-3 seconds, the sync window opens for that one email. In here you can adjust how you want the sync to function for this email.

You can do the same for each email, news, stock app you may have here.

The top of the accounts and sync window has two options with check box's, put a check in both of those. If you dont want one or both of those checked then leave it blank.

Now...Lets say you have these all set, and you still are not getting certain emails on the phone but they show on the computer.

To fix this you need to adjust your settings on your computer.

Try this first....close the mail program on the computer or any other computers, next send a email from the phone to yourself (if your using your ABCD email for instance, send a email to your ABCD email address). This should come in on the phone. Now check your computer to see if it shows there also.

Now while the email on the computer is open send one from the computer, see if it makes it to the phone or it just shows on the computer.

The reason for the testing is some email clients if open on the computer, will pull the emails into that and will not go to the phone or other computers that email may be set up on.

There is settings to fix this, on the email on the computer you just need to change a settings. All programs are different (outlook, windows mail) so i will give you general directions to find it.

Open the email program on the computer:

Outlook Express, Windows Mail or similiar

Tools, Accounts, (highlight your email) then click properties, click the "Advanced" Tab, put a check in the boxes to keep a copy on the server and then the third box put a check also if you want.

    Windows 7:

The email is listed on the left when open, it will have your full email above the inbox.

Right click the full email, properties, advanced tab...again first and third box at the bottom put a check in those.

NOTE: after making this change click the "Ok" or "Save" button on the bottom of the screen so it saves your change.

Now just retest with a new email and you should now get the email in both the computer and phone emails. If you are not getting it on the phone atill, your inbound server settings are not correct on the phone, check those (SSL, Authentication - this will cause some emails to go thru and others to not go thru).

EDIT: Just to mention this, with multiple emails on multiple computers...the above settings i mention have to be checked. Example: You have the ABCD email set up on your work computer, your home computer and your phone. The email you send from the phone gets to the phone and the home computers, it DOES NOT get tot he work computer. This could be due to the firewall at work because of the content in the email was picked up for whatever reason, you need to bring this up with your IT dept at work, they can fix it or tell you why its not going thru.

If you send the email from the phone and it goes to just the home computer then the settings i mention above need to be checked. The reason is if the program si open and its not set to save on the server, it "Only" goes to that one email because the program is open, it will not go to the phone or work emails.

  • FYI - I just re-set the synch-time to 5 minutes on the phone.

The e-mail account (I use Thunderbird) is, and has always been, set to leave the mails on the server for 7 days (is this the setting you have been trying to indicate?).

I will monitor over the next couple of days to see if the 5min synch helps.

I never had this problem with my BB- it always stayed synched with my POP account and computer.

    Thanks,

    - Jeff

  • Well that may be one issue but not exactly what i was mentioning.

That setting in thunderbird if set to leave for only 7 days, will remove anything 7 days and older from the server.

Now this setting will be an issue for a few reasons, if you leave anything in the inbox, the 7 days or older emails will be removed from the inbox. If you are saving emails on the phone that are over 7 days and they are in the inbox on the phone, they will be gone when the server does not save them any longer.

When you go to check the emails it may take a bit longer to reach the phone but it should come in. If it takes a long time then it could be the email server itself is lagging trying to reach your phone or the phone is going a long way to get your email.

What i mean by that is your phone could be going thru servers in california and its being sent from maine, and you are in maine. Any issues along the way mght slow it up some, cant fix any of that.

You can get different settings from the email client that may work better, as i mentioned they have diferent settings for laptops and internet ready phones (usualy business servers and that info can be found online).

GMAIL - go to "standard configurations instructions", steps 1 &2 to the bottom:

    mail.google.com/.../answer.py

You dont mention a problem with thunderbird itself but if so just check online for any recent changes to the setting yahoo would need for thunderbird.

Did any of this help you?

If you have stuff you move to external folders in thunderbird, or have rules set for so they go to specific folders, they will not do any of that on the phone, they will just be in the phone inbox until you move them ect. If you have stuff you keep in the inbox and you need those emails, you may want to make it longer (30, 60, 90 or keep until you remove).

Ok now here is the tricky part to this portion with the emails....that 7 days is set on a rotating basis. This means when its full (7 days worth of emails), the oldest is automaticaly deleted to make room for the new emails.

The phone also has a setting so when you delete a email from the phone, it removes it off the server (excellent for spam and emails you dont want or need). This will help keep your email clean on the computer and the email server but it also is excellent when it comes to being organized since you will not also have to go on th ecomputer and delete them off there as well when this setting is on (time saver here).

Ok now sync time -Yes that was it, so with it at 5 minutes, it will pull your emails off the server every 5 minutes. This is where the computer setting to keep on server comes in, if its not on then when the phone pulls it off the server, there is no copy to get on the computer later.

This sync setting is set to 15 minutes on mine just to save battery life. When i open it it gets emails and i dont need it to check often.

  • Fixed it. Upidstay is as upidstay does.

Turns out "leave on server" somehow got turned off. It appears to work now. Not sure how that happened.

Will re-post if I have any more troubles. Thanks for the help.

  • Your welcome anytime. With emails if it stops working all of a sudden or it does sometimes and dont others, its usualy a setting is off so check those first.

    Have a great day.
