Fix for Email Syncing Issue?

Fix for Email Syncing Issue?

Not Answered
  • First; let me say that its surprising that this isn't already here...  But from the little research i've tried to do about the subject, there hasn't been an answer I could find...

Anyway, I recently purchased this phone new...  Love it, like all other HTC phones i've bought but among a couple of other issues; this is most troubling...  I've noticed that the Auto Sync function for "Mail" doesn't sync on schedule...

I set it for 15 min on Peak Hours and 1 Hour for Off-Peak and it doesn't follow that schedule...  Maybe for the first week or so it worked but now, it seems I have to manually sync it if I want to receive any of my e-mails...  I didn't really notice it until one day I got over 15+ e-mails at one time...  NOW, even if I restart my phone it doesn't sync...  And normally (at least when I had my Sensation); restarting the phone would automatically Sync anything that was turned on and/or activated to sync regardless of the schedule...

IIRC, from the pages i've seen, this problem is almost over a year old...  Any solution!?!  Will the hope of an Jelly Bean update remedy this problem!?!  (And hopefully the Copy & Paste; as well as Personal Dictionary issue)...

Hi TPJr, to help narrow down the cause of your sync problem with the Mail app I have some steps you can take to ensure everything is setup correctly. Also, do you mainly use a Wi-Fi connection or your mobile data plan on your phone for email?

To ensure all of the HTC Sense components are functioning properly, check to see if your phone has any task killer like apps enabled and running in the background. If it does, I’d recommend uninstalling it as they can cause unpredictable results. You can review the apps installed on your phone by going into your settings > applications > manage applications > downloaded.

The next step is to ensure your accounts are enabled under the Sync/Accounts section under the settings of your phone. If everything is already on there, I’d recommend making use of the Google Play Store and downloading a third party mail app to see if you experience similar behavior. Try a search string of “K9” for a popular mail app that supports multiple Microsoft exchange accounts. Test that app out for a day or so to see if it has the same problems you’re experiencing with the regular Mail app.

Give those steps a try and shoot us a reply back with your results; hope this helps! :)

  • I have an Unlimited Data Plan and I don't have any Task Killer apps installed or running in the background...  And I know that my accounts are enabled in the Sync/Accounts section...

I've also researched this K-9 Mail app...  Even before I posted this question...but looking at the reviews; this app doesn't look all too promising...  From what I can see, it either eats up your battery or worst yet, it doesn't send you e-mails...

And at the moment, I would rather have to continually manually sync my e-mails than to have my e-mails not be sent at all (Mostly Work Related)...  Besides, I shouldn't have to rely on an 3rd party app to address the "Mail" Syncing issue, which seems to have been a problem from when the phone was newly on the market...  (At least from all my searches about the situation)...

This phone was supposed to be a step up from the Sensation...  And so far, i've found 3 annoying issues with the phone...  #1. Mail not syncing on schedule or at all...  #2.  Copy & Paste ONLY pastes at the very END of any message or e-mail, and I have to do 2 extra steps just to get it to do that...  #3.  Can't add Smileys to my Personal Dictionary; while I could on the Sensation...  But this one is minor...

Thanks for responding back TPJr! I had recommended trying out the K9 Mail app to verify if it was just the mail app working that way, or other mail apps as well. What type of e-mail address are you using primarily? (Google, Hotmail, Yahoo, Microsoft Exchange, etc?)

To further narrow down the culprit of the problems you’re experiencing, try starting your phone up in safe mode. Safe Mode is primarily used for troubleshooting and prevents any unneeded apps from starting automatically after a fresh restart of your phone. To get your phone into safe mode, power off your phone from your home screen by pressing and holding your power button until an option to power off appears. After your phone is off, remove your battery for 60-90 seconds, reinsert it and power your phone back on. When your screen lights up, press and hold your volume down button until your phone is completely back on. If successful, you should see the words safe mode in the bottom corner (to exit safe mode, simply repeat the process of removing your battery above and power your phone on again).

Try using your phone in this state for a few hours to see if you notice any change in your phone’s behavior. Hopefully this will give us a few clues to go on! :)

  • Ah, I see...  I didn't think about that...  Maybe I will have to give the K9 Mail app a try after all...

But the only email addresses i'm using is Hotmail (2) and Google...  @hotmail, @live and @gmail...

I've put the phone in Safe Mode, so i'll have to give an update sometime tomorrow; especially seeing as the Peak Time has already expired...  But right out of the gate I noticed a prbblem when the phone booted up...  It synced (as it should; and what i've come to expect from my previous HTC devices) BUT when I went into my Accounts & Sync section the "Mail" accounts didn't Sync at all...

Right now, I only have Facebook, Google, Mail (Hotmail), Mail (Live), Mail (Gmail) and Weather as Sync accounts...  Facebook, Google and Weather all synced when the phone rebooted...but the 3 Mail accounts still "read" as the last sync being 4 hours ago (when I manually synced it)...

But now as i'm typing this, (I went to check the time again); and it reads that it synced 3 minutes later (after the other accounts synced)...  So...  *shrugs*

Update soon...and possibly after I try that K9 Mail app...

  • *UPDATE

Okay, well Safe Mode didn't change the frequency of the e-mail sync so that was a no-go...  Put it back in "normal" mode and tried the K-9 Mail app...  And surprisingly (after reading the reviews) it works...  But it works in the sense that the Push ability; or rather, the Sync Frequency works as it should...  Every 15 minutes it "Polls" my e-mails...  So in that regard, its excellent...

BUT, this app doesn't seem to want to work with any Microsoft Word or Excel Spreadsheet documents I need to view...  As I mentioned, my Mail accounts are primarily for work...  And everytime I go to view either of these two documents; the app crashes...  The only thing I can view; that I use on occassion is PDF files...  So seeing as I can't use this app as a replacement; unfortunately it has to be uninstalled...  Without the ability to view these files, having it sync at my set requirments; makes it null and void...

So now, i'm back to square one...

  • Looks like we’ve narrowed down a lot of what the problem isn’t so far TPJr! A last item on the list to try would be to remove all of the accounts from the Accounts & Sync section under your settings. Power your phone off, remove the battery for 60-90 seconds, reinsert it and power your phone back on; add a single email account of your choice and allow it to automatically sync. If it works properly, add an additional account one by one until they’re all verified to be working properly. Once your accounts are re-added and synced, all of your emails will get pushed back to your phone. As a precaution though, be sure to backup any important documents.

As a last resort, if this doesn’t help I’d recommend reaching out to our customer support to be assisted through a factory data reset step by step safely after having your phone’s data backed up. The contact number can be found on our website at http://www.htc.com/www/contact/#phone ; hope these steps help!

  • Okay, tried the above and it worked for the first hour (a single account)...  But when I went to check my phone two hours later; it read that the last sync was two hours ago...  So that too is a dead end...  *shrugs*  Doesn't look like their is a fix..

Oh well, I guess i'll  have to hope that the Amaze receives the Jelly Bean update and this issue along with two other issues I have with the phone has been addressed...  Otherwise, I guess i'll just have to keep Manual Syncing it myself or just wait for the newest HTC phone that supports a SD card AND a removable battery...

And doing a factory reset is not an option...  This is been an issue since I first purchased the phone (NEW and Recently), can't say that's its even a month old yet (for me)...  I went back and forth via e-mails with HTC about the phone not being able to Copy and Paste where I want it (only seems to want to paste at the very end of a message or e-mail or w/e) as well as it not adding smileys (which the Sensation had no problem with) to my Personal Dictionary...  The end result of that exchanges was; unfortunately smileys aren't able to be added to the personal dictionary...  And concerning the Copy & Paste; I should do a factory reset...  *smh*  I can't believe that was even a suggestion; especially when I mentioned that the phone wasn't even a week old yet...

But anyway, thanks for the help...  I guess i'll just have to reference the Matrix and believe, "There is no Spoon"...  :-\

Thanks for shooting back an update on your progress TPJr! What was the provider for the account tried first and did you experience that same behavior for the other e-mails as well from other providers? I would recommend using the Gmail App from the Google Play Store for your gmail e-mail account; there is also a hotmail app on there as well designed for your live accounts.

  • The e-mail I used first was the one that has the most activity for my work related documents; which is Hotmail...  Actually out of all of them, its the only one that really matters...  But as i've said before, i'll just have to wait until the next phone or if the phone will receive the JB update and it somehow is "fixed" within that upgrade...

The Gmail app isn't necessary...  My Gmail account is a personal account; but it isn't used with enough frequency, for me to need the use of the app...  And the Hotmail app...  Well to say the least, it works...  But; the UI looks horrible and more importantly, it only allows for e-mail for up to 30 days...  And it is this reason alone; why the Hotmail app isn't going to work...  I go back and reference multiple e-mails which are past the 30 days "expiration setting"...  And the fact that every e-mail I receive; I have to click the "Show Images" button for it doesn't help the app...

So, no...  I think we've come to the end of this tunnel...  Unfortunately for me though, there was no light...
