I seem to be running into every error possible trying to update my phone. I installed from HTC got the first error, redownloaded from sprint and now I'm getting this USB connection error, but the computer recognizes my phone so I know it's working. Anyone else have this problem? Do you know how to fix it?
I'm receiving the same error that you've described:
ERROR: USB CONNECTION ERROR
The ROM Update Utility cannot connect to your Android phone. Please check that the USB cable is connected properly between the PC and your Android phone.
Check the following:
1. The Android phone is connected to the USB cable.
2. The USB cable is connected to the PC.
I've also updated HTC Sync to the new version (2.0.33) this morning and it no longer works. I would bet that this is an issue with the drivers for Windows 7 64-bit edition and is related to our problem with the ROM Update Utility. This is all very similar to the first time I installed HTC Sync which was a nightmare and required contacting support for a workaround to get the drivers installed.
Hopefully someone in support can verify this and advise us on how to proceed. In the meantime I will attempt to look up the instructions that support gave me last time the drivers didn't work. If I figure this thing out I will report back.
Keep us posted
I keep getting error 170
Seems to be a problem with the sync update- I'm trying to download it again- but is taking hours (as it did last night)
I WAS having the same problem. Error 170, USB not connected.
As mentioned by others, I can tell the computer sees it, as it shows up when I plug the phone in. I get a prompt to open the folder.
I tried it on two computers:
Brand new iMac, running XP through Bootcamp
Dell Latitude D630 / running Vista
-- Apparently you need to make sure the USB is 2.0
I needed to instal the SYNC update - once I installed that on my Dell, and unplugged, then plugged my phone back in - SYNC recognized my phone.
I kept SYNC running, as well as my browser, Chrome, and tried the RUU again - and it WORKED!!!! WhooHoo!
Hope this works for you.
Hey, disable any firewalls and antivirus. Don't run anything else on the computer. Make sure you're using 2.0.33, and have USB 2.0. There is no issues with Windows 7, 64 or 32 bit.
**Firewalls and antivirus HAVE TO BE DISABLE WHILE DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING EITHER FILE!!!!!!! DO NOT DISABLE UNTIL YOU MAKE A SUCCESSFUL SYNC WITH HTC SYNC****

I actually got tech help from HTC, but not anything that worked.
I had to download a USB Driver for WIndows 7 64bit; origins of the drivers are unknown, but at least they work - located at www.mydigitallife.info/.../workaround-for-htc-hero-sync-problem-in-windows-7 - but the instructions on the page made no sense and didn't work.
What worked for me was downloading the driver and manually updating the driver through devices in Windows. That fixed the problem with updating the ROM on my Hero.
I'm guessing you're using Win 7? There are various driver issues with Win 7 and HTC Sync.
I had the same problem, and whilst there do seem to be solutions on other forums, the absolute easiest thing to do is just use a PC running Win XP (I had an old laptop I could dig out with it on, but you're bound to know someone with it who's willing to let you use their PC for half an hour).
Worked straight away with no issues on XP (and it wasn't even an up to date version of HTC Sync)
right lets go
device manager> adb interface then on your android right click then update driver> browse my comp for driver then at the bottom select let me pick from a list of drivers on my pc select HTC hero
next run the RUU it should crash out during boot loader and give a NEW error 171, DONT touch the phone leave it on the white screen and run the RUU again and WINNER updated ;)
Yes! This worked!
Thanks winkdroid! I hadn't been able to sync my phone for over 3 weeks as I kept getting errors. Followed your procedure and I'm back in business. Most appreciated! :-)
Cheers mate, this worked perfectly!
Was trying to update to Froyo from 2.1 but bootloader kept crashing and kept getting the Error 170, which was driving me crazy.
Then came across Winkdroid's instructions, to let the bootloader crash out BUT then keeping the phone plugged in, just run the RUU again. Wierd approach I thought, but tried it...and remarkably it worked like a dream! Now have a shiny new Froyo Legend
Winkdroid, I have no idea how you found this out but absolutely brilliant stroke of genius!
Good stuff Winkdroid!!! After a full day of trying to figure this out, your suggestion worked like a charm. So do you know if this is a windows 7 issue or an issue altogether? Also if you leave your sync options on your android as "auto sync" - after the update, your contacts will automatically be retained.
i tried your method last night but couldnt find the adb interface...help
I found the issue to be with the version of the HTC sync driver for my MyTouch 3G Slide (HTC Sense I believe).
T-Mobile's website says:
The HTC Syncv3.0.5511 is the version that works for the froyo update.
The link above for TMobile sends you to a newer 3.0.5579 version. This initially gave me the Error 170. I noticed it had a driver error when my phone was connected and maybe the correct Sync driver after you update froyo.
