HTC Hero Low on Space

  • Just recently, I am getting a notification that my HTC Hero phone storage is low on space.  I've deleted everything that I can think of and the message is still there.  I looked at my phone memory and it reports that I have 5GB out of 8 on my SD card and 2MB is available in my internal memory.  Is there some way to clear out the internal memory?  Because of this, I am unable to open any of my text messages to reply.

  • I have the same issue and it is very annoying.  Why can't we load Apps onto SD card?  I am getting the "low on space" notification and "phone storage is full" error when I try to open a text message.  Clearing some caches helps.  But I can not figure out the phone memory structure for the life of me.  I do have alot of apps downloaded, however I don't understand why some of them randomly open themselves up.  I am using the advanced task killer and the max memory I have available usually reported from there is ~70M.  Normally I am hoovering around ~20MB free.

How do we free up space (other than clearing caches repeatedly)?

  • After I posted this, I called Sprint Tech support.  By this time, my memory was less than 1MB and the phone stopped working and I had already lost the ability to read/send text messages.  Sprint said there was no way to clear the memory and that I would have to bring it in for an exchange (if still under warranty).  After hanging up, I figured I might as well try a hard reset (yes all my apps disappeared) and amazingly enough, the phone memory was restored to around 150MB.  I have now almost returned the phone to the same status as before the hard reset, and after re-installing all of my apps I'm at 115MB ("internal phone storage" under the settings -> SD card & phone storage dropdown menu).

  • Did you update your phone to the latest firmware? When it first came out I read about a lot of people having a problem with memory leaking because of the SMS app and bluetooth. People gave up using the default SMS app, as it was eating through all the available memory in a few days.

It sounded to me like they fixed the issue with an OTA update in November. The update screen is under Settings-->About Phone-->System Updates.

Could also have to do with a new issue that hasn't been patched yet. Talked about in this thread http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=201583&highlight=leak.

  • I had the same issues with internal memory. My phone started to lock up and I have to do a hard reset. I think it is stupid that you can ONLY save your market apps to internal memory. HTC need to fix this and let us save Market apps to the SD card!!!! I currently have 50mb of internal memory left but afraid to download anymore Market apps even though I have a 4gb SD card. How lame is that!!!

  • this issue appears to have nothing to do with how much space you actually have, whether it's on the SD Card or on the phone  - it appears to be a big HTC Mail bug that's just crushing my phone as well, no matter what I purge or reset - there is a long thread here about it - forum.androidcentral.com/.../12215-htc-mail-memory-leak-bug-phone-storage-getting-low-2.html

it's very frustrating and will probably cause me to take back the phone

  • that is an Android 2.1 issue, not an HTC issue.   It will be addressed in 2.2, and then app makers have to make sure they offer that option.  It's not related to the memory storage is low bug, however, which is an HTC Mail Bug

  • the question is HTC or Sprint aware all these problem or do they think everything went smoothly will thier even be a 2.2 for the Hero even though it came out a year ago and how long will we have a wait til October 2010 ?

  • A similar thing happened with my Hero. I wanted to add my music, so I plugged it into the computer. Everything went smoothly until I got toward the end of the space. It said there was not enough space, so I tried to delete some songs and some pictures, but the memory won't budge even. The worst part is that after I had taken the songs off, I couldn't put the same ones back on even though they had fit before. It is almost as if nothing was ever deleted, but its also gone without a trace. I don' think that I am dealing with internal memory, but this problem is really stumping me, any help would be fantastic

  • I think you are dealing with the internal memory the HTC Hero 2.1 have a big problem with leaking internal memory i have a 2GB SD card and all my music and pictures and video fix on there easily and it still not full yet you not add pic or music to the internal memory anyway but yeah since 2.1 the internal memory go down overnight i dont even have to use my phone and the memory would just go down to 9MB magically

  • The only solution i can tell you is to go to HTC or Sprint and download the new 2.27.651.6  i dont think anyone is aware of that version yet everyone still on 2.27.651.5 and ur other solution that might really work is dont do nothing go to ur local sprint store and show them proof of ur 2.1 error let them see the low on space on ur phone and you should get a free replacement

  • 1.Instal Uninstaller Pro from the market and uninstall some apps and games.

    2. Delete cache, history from the browser.
