HTC did not load the full version of Bluetooth that a person would receive with 2.1 Android.  The version on these phones is held over from a previous version of Android either due in part to loading sense ui and not upgrading these key vital component or simply because it conflicted with Sense.  Things that probably won't work include HID Bluetooth devices like a wii remote or bluetooth keyboard/mouse.  Some other profiles such as SPP may also not work because we simply don't have the most current Android version of Bluetooth installed on these devices.  It's not cool that I don't have a complete 2.1 device.

HTC should get an OTA worked out immediately to resolve this problem.  I'm not expecting anyone to answer my post with a solution because this is cooked into the rom(current loaded Operating System).  Yes if someone does find a way to root the Incredible the developers in the community may be able to resolve this but most people don't do this and need this functionality.  Please post if you are having issues with bluetooth because it needs to be obvious to HTC that this is a big problem that needs to be resolved.

I'm especially annoyed that they call this 2.1 Android when its not the same as Nexus One Android.  We have key missing components from the most current version on a brand new phone.  Simply Unacceptable when you offer up the HTC Incredible as an option instead of the Nexus One.

Thanks for doing this research.  How did you discover that the Bluetooth version is from a release prior to 2.1?

I bought the phone to use with an SPP GPS device, and I am really disappointed that the Incredible will not work with the device.  I would not have bought the phone had I know it had this deficiency.

There are some developers including me who want to create applications for people to use that work with all the current devices on the market.  The problem is we have applications that work fine with non HTC phones running sense ui.  When you try to pair the device it sees the device but lower level coding to talk to and connect to bluetooth acts like no device is available.  I found several developers trying to say they had made an HID driver for 2.0 + devices but it still doesn't work on HTC phones yet it works perfectly on the nexus one and other non senseui phones.

There is a difference in the bluetooth between the phones.  That is clear.  The fact that SPP and HID aren't connecting and were released on other 2.0+ devices leads me to believe that HTC put all their effort into sense on 2.0 and simply didn't bother to upgrade the bluetooth as well.  If they are working on it a note about it on the device specifications page would be nice.

If you search online for issues with the wiimote  (using a wii wireless controller from the game system) connecting to sense ui phones.  You will find a bunch of issues that all point to bluetooth not correctly implemented as well.  Works great on nexus one and doesn't work at all on any htc phone.

The new bluetooth options was supposed to be a part of the hype about the 2.1 release.  It stands to reason that we don't have the most current version because it acts like nothing exists in the code when you try to connect.  

Thanks for posting about this Xarthos.  I too am trying to develop an app that utilizes a bluetooth device attempting to communicate over SPP.  It's very frustrating that this isn't supported by the Incredible.

Are not trying to cross-post but is this a possible reason why my Bluetooth doesn't work in my late-modeled BMW but other bluetooth phone work without a problem?

The worst part for me is I bought the Incredible with the intention of using a keyboard... I purchased the keyboard only to find out it does not work.  I love this phone; hopefully HTC is going to fix it.

You are correct droidbum.  That is exactly why it won't work.  I'd bet that the BMW's all use SPP profiles over bluetooth and even though that is one of the features of 2.1 Android for some unknown reason HTC didn't include it in the senseui build they use on these phones.  They just have to give us an OS that has the correct Bluetooth in it to fix the problem.  This could be done with an OTA update.

Call me ignorant of BT 2.1 but my LG Dare allowed me to press a button on my Motorola H685 and Jabra SP700 to make a call with BT 2.0 (& AD2P) .  They pair fine with the Incredible but when I press the "Command" or "Call" button it just beeps (sounds like "huh?").  I would much rather be able to press a big button on the visor mounted Jabra or H685 on my ear to make a call while I'm driving rather than look at a 2"x3.5" screen and hope my finger (that isn't pointed like a stylus) is going to find the right UI hyperlink. 

So far I can't find anything about how to make handsfree calls in the Incredible User Guide.  Anyone know if the Incredible supports Voice Dialer from a hands free device?

Hi everyone.  Looking to upgrade my phone from the BB Curve to the Incredible.  I don't know anything about the Android OS and I am wondering if it's as customizable as the BB OS?  If it is, would you be able to take the bluetooth profile from another droid device that is updated to 2.1 and load it onto the Incredible?  I have an 2005 BMW and would want my phone to pair with its bluetooth, but from what I've read, this is an issue.  Thanks.

I am unable to connect my Bluetooth to my 2010 Mercedes.  We have 2 HTC upgraded phones, and they both connect to other cars, just not the new Mercedes. I spent 40 minutes on the phone with HTC yesterday, only to listen to the representative search for solutions on public forums, of course to find none. Thanks for the research, everyone, and for the confirmation that I am not losing my mind.

Due to BMW using SPP profiles bluetooth i don't think it is going to work.  There are multiple posts from other BMW owners here that say they are having problems because they can't connect.  The more I read and look into this issue the more I believe we are using bluetooth from 1.5 Android.  An OTA update where a new version of the ROM(operating system) is loaded could resolve this problem.  We don't have root access yet on the Incredible which allows home cooked Rom's.  Until we have a complete OS to load on the phone we can't resolve the Bluetooth issue.  The Bluetooth stack is embedded in the Rom that is loaded to this phone.  It's not a copy paste fix sadly unless you have a complete OS to install with the correct Bluetooth files.

I love the phone but this is a major deal breaker for so many people that I would think HTC will have to do something to resolve this. 

I am having the same problems with my 2009 Mercedes.  Prior to the system update on May 18, 2010 I had no problems connecting with the bluetooth at all.  Connecting through my car is essential.  I'm wondering if I should go back to Verizon and ask for a replacement that toes not have the new operating system stored on it.

Hello everyone, hold on to your hats.  I have a story to tell: I just returned the Incredible because I have had multiple problems, but none more serious than the bluetooth.  I have a Ford F-150 Lariat with the Sync system. When I connect the Incredible to Sync, the phone works ok.  The problem is with my truck.  Whenever the phone is connected, my rear camera, A/C, and windshield wipers fail (they work at first, then stop while I'm driving).  This happened twice already and that was enough for me.  Having no windshield wipers while driving is a serious problem (although I probably don't have to tell you all that).  I have been back and forth with HTC, Sync, Ford, and Verizon, but no one will do anything about it.  They just point fingers at eachother.  I spoke to someone at HTC last night who told me it sounds like there's a problem with the computer in my truck.  He said it is trying to stay connected to the phone, but is taking power away from the rear camera, A/C, and winshield wipers in order to stay connected.  I went to Ford today and had the run a check on the truck.  Twelve (12) codes came up ranging from the transmission to the wipers, A/C, and camera.  They told me they have never sen anything like this before.  I am waiting to hear back from them and their conversations with Ford's engineers. Although I am glad codes came up for multiple problems, I can't help but think the phone caused all of this.  I did an experiment earlier last night and turned the bluetooth off on the phone while the failure occurred.  Coincidently, everything in the truck worked.  I am done with this phone for now until something is done with the bluetooth.  I am glad I found this thread.  If any of you use the Incredible and Sync, please be careful.  

I am having issues with the Incredible connecting to my Alpine head unit.  I have had several phones paired with it in the past without a single problem.  So far the Inc. is hit and miss on whether or not it will talk with the radio, and TWICE the radio has mysteriously powered down for several seconds before coming back on.  Very scary indeed.  Once it did this while I was trying to get it to talk to the radio, the other time when I tried to answer an incoming call.  Something is definitely not right as I had an Eris for a month and it worked perfect with my Alpine.  (Alpine CDA-105 and Alpine KCE-400BT module)
