  • Anyone else having problem with phone shutting off? Already had phone switched out by Verizon last weekend because phone would shut off and had to pull battery for a few minutes before it would restart. New phone was doing the same but not nearly as often. Now since update, phone is shutting off.  Don't have to pull battery, but have to turn back on.

  • Haven't had a problem with shutting off... I did with my last pda & verizon told me I had to scrub the phone & update the system software (which I was unwilling to do).  Anyway, that is clearly not your problem... good luck!!

TO ANYONE CONTEMPLATING THE SYSTEM WIPE TO FIX EMAIL.... DON'T DO IT... you'll waste hours & it officially does NOT work...

  • Tiredofthetimesuck:

Hi Eliz, that is the problem everyone is having.  It is more or less like the droid is not actually downloading the messages to the phone, rather reading them off the email host server.  As a result, as soon as you retrieve the message from the host server on your desktop, it just disappears off the phone.

The system has always been this way as most people have email deleted off the sever when using their desktop or laptop to retrieve.

I learned to set up my email on my Incredible to download MORE than the headers as the issue you speak of would occur. I started with maybe 20k being downloaded then I went higher.  If By chance I logged into my laptop which is set to remove messages from server,  I still had the emails on my phone.

I did not have to redo anything on my phone after the upgrade yesterday. I just rebooted and have been good to go. Well, I did play with force close and clearing caches, which cleared my bookmarks and weather locations. Live and learn.

  • ok folks, another long hold time on the phone with HTC and here is the one and ONLY solution for the email disappearing problem:

You must leave all messages on your host email server...

which, of course, nobody does and is completely illogical.  Apparently, the new OS is designed to "help" us out by deleting any message that it sees we've deleted from our mail server.... there you go, if you don't use Gmail you are screwed (which - of course - is the point).  I questioned the logic of this, I mean people download to their computers and devices everything, THEN they decide what to keep and what not to keep.  The dump from the host server is, just that, a wholesale dump ...  The rep basically said he saw my point but there was nothing they could do other than tell me to create a whole separate host of issues by leaving all mail on the host server forever.  So those of us with pop accounts are basically completely screwed.  I asked why, if it was fine before, they can't just make a patch & was told that they may be able to but none now exists.  Of course, they wont patch this, it is clearly an attempt to force us all to switch to gmail.

I never thought a company could go lower than microsoft and - voila - HTC has done it.  Iphone here I come

  • Thank you Budone... but that isn't the problem.  When I got my Droid I made all the adjustments you speak of also, and - prior to this nightmare system update - once the email was on my Droid it was there to stay until I deleted it.  There was no further communication with the host email server and whether I left it on the remote server or deleted it was irrelevant to my having the messages on my Droid.  Every PDA I've ever owned worked that way... NO problems.

This software update changed that.  Now, as soon as the mail refreshes on the Droid, if it looks at the host server and the message is gone, then it will be instantaneously deleted from your Droid.  There is no way to keep it according to HTC short of leaving messages on your host server (which most people cannot do, we have capacity limits) and no phone setting that can be adjusted.  I hoped that it was moving the messages to the 'trash' folder, which would create a backdoor inbox... but nope.  The messages just disappear completely from the Droid.  That was never a problem before the update &, per HTC, it was a specifically designed change and is not an unintended glitch.

  • I've got to believe this is an error and not by design.

The problem I'm having is that the mail app says I have new messages.  I open it up and they disappear from the droid.. even without accessing the messages from another computer.  Then they return a few hours later.  It's screwy!

I got a notification that I had four new messages (some were actually old).. I put the phone down.. picked it back up.. now no messages at all.

Come on, HTC.. please fix this!

  • I am using Exchange Activesync and after the 2.2 update the sync part isn't working. Nothing syncs anymore....calendar, contacts, email, nothing. The message I get is that I need to check the exchange settings. Nothing has changed, the settings are fine. Anyone else seen this? Any suggestions. Verizon said, Hard Reset. Not so sure about that.

  • Trust me... Mr. HTC was very specific.  The new op system was designed to delete messages. It is for our convenience :)  Sigh.....  I really didn't get the sense we should count on a fix from them...

I had some of that screwy stuff you are talking about at first and now that I understand what was going on it was just some random stuff left on the mail server when I was traveling and some timing flux as to when my desktop downloaded vs the droid.  I got my hopes up a couple times that it was gonna work after all....  alas, no such luck.  Also, if you do a wipe, remember that you need to redo all the email settings.  When I first brought the email back up I didn't notice that (I'd done a settings restore & overestimated what it actually did) & my email was - by default - set back to 'delete messages from server' . Soooo, I got the messages on my droid, then closed email... excitedly hoping the prob was fixed.  When I went back to email, it auto-refreshed and deleted the same unread messages.  Why, cuz I'd accessed them a moment before and they were in turn deleted from my mail server, so when the email refreshed when I went back in, the Droid saw the messages gone from the server and 'poof'... make sense.  It does seem like a gremlin or bug, but they did it on purpose.  The good news... the messages in question were not actually deleted from my host server... Droid just thought they were, so I didn't lose those messages (I was panicked!).  That said, I really fear others may wind up losing messages inadvertently and the worst part is that they may not realize it.  This is a train wreck, the Google engineers are idiots!

    Good luck!

  • Johnsoaw - I suggest you switch to the HTC synch software and - much as I hate HTC - don't even bother talking to Verizon about your Droid... seriously, go straight to HTC.  It is a complete waste of time dealing with Verizon they have no clue and HTC intentionally keeps them clueless IMO.  Anyway, even when I needed drivers to get my laptop to work with mobile broadband (i.e., a problem completely unrelated to synch....) all the magic answers were ultimately found with a download of HTC's software.  Just look on here under the Droid device section and click the downloads tab.  It should be there.

Do a wipe as a last resort... that is the answer they give if they don't know an answer....

  • I have the same problem since the 2.2 update. HTC suggested a hard reset, but it did not solve the problem. Now I can't add the Exchange account back to my Incredible. Verizon has not been any help with this issue either, other than saying that there would be an update to fix the problem. I'm not holding my breath.

  • Hi IGO2UA - as I mentioned to another poster, I'm pretty sure you are gonna have to switch to the the HTC synch software which you can download on this site. Basically, Google is pulling a microsoft and making everything that doesn't come from them a nightmare to try and use...  good luck!  I don't even synch and I still had to download the HTC synch program in order to fix problems I've had with my Droid... it really is unbelievable!!

  • Hello Tiredofthetimesuck, I have the HTC Sync software. I am having problems with my Exchange ActiveSync. I'm not sure how how HTC Sync will help. Please explain.

  • WORKAROUND - (DO NOT RESET YOUR PHONE - I DOUBT THAT WILL WORK ANYWAYS)

Ok.  Just got off Level 1 tech support with HTC and Verizon.  They are NOT aware of this problem but it is very easy to reproduce.  It would appear the 2.2 upgrade will grab emails off the server and delete them off the server if you have the Setting Delete Mail on Server OFF  (This is counter intuitive but I have tested and you should leave Delete Mail on Server to ON if you want to  leave your messages on the server for your PC.)

In addition, with the 2.2 upgrade when you access email on your PC and it downloads the emails to your PC off the server, the next time the phone tries to Sync it deletes all current email on the phone and then resyncs with the server. Very stupid design.  Someone needs in QA and engineering needs to be demoted.

    Here is the simple workaround:

    1) On your PC, launch Outlook and Click Tools, then Account Settings, Click Change on the email account and then Click More Settings, Click the Tab Advanced and then Check Leave a copy of message on the Server.  (You can also specify how many days you want.)

    2) On your phone, launch the Mail application, Click Menu, then More, then Settings.  Under SEND/RECEIVE, make sure the Delete Mail on Server is ON

This will fix your problem till the next upgrade.

BTW - I had to reproduce this problem and go through the test myself with both techs simply listening on the phone. (Using my 2 PC's and phone).  I told them to please document and pass the word hopefully to the engineering team.  It would appears the Support team is NOT in synch with the Engineering team.

    GOOD LUCK

  • Thanks for tracking it down.  I was getting close to cracking the case!

I even tried using the mail droid app.  It seems a bit more reliable.. but it too had the same problems.

All I know is everything worked perfectly with Android 2.1.

  • Just got off the phone with HTC Support.

Guy said they do not know if the problem and they could not help me any further unless I committed to a complete system reset. I told him I wasn't willing to put in that time and effort unless he knew it was part of the fix AND I had seen in the forums that it was not part of the fix.

Get this... he said, "We don't pay any attention to the forums." I said that's unfortunate because that is where the issues first come up.

Anyway, EditMan - thank YOU for coming up with a workaround.

p.s. "... you should leave Delete Mail on Server to ON if you want to  leave your messages on the server for your PC."  SERIOUSLY HTC? Turn ON delete mail on server to NOT delete the mail on the server?
