I’m sorry to hear that you’re having difficulty with your Google Talk app, however I have some troubleshooting tips that might just help get it working again.

First, go to Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> All> Talk> Clear Cache and Clear Data.  If you clear the data, your chat log will be deleted but there will be no serious side effects.  

If this doesn’t work then try a soft reset.  To perform a soft reset, power the phone down normally and then remove the battery for a minute before replacing it and starting the phone again.  This refreshes your phone, and may restore Talk’s functionality.

If you’re still having issues after this, then I suggest calling my teammates in Customer Support.  You’ll find their contact information at http://www.htc.com/support.  

Thanks for chiming in Corey.  Have been on phone twice with HTC support and seem to have them stumped.  All buttons at Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> All> Talk are greyed out.  Pulled the battery; no improvement. One tech support suggested a factory reset, the other had me dial in for a "checkin" with the servers.  Obviously factory reset will be last resort!

This definitely isn't how your phone should be responding.  If you’ve already tried the troubleshooting tips that I suggested above, then a full factory data reset may be your best option.  Setting your phone back to factory settings will delete any data saved directly to your phone, such as contacts, but anything stored on your SD card will be preserved.

Before performing the reset, I suggest backing up your contacts.  To do so, go from your Home screen to People> Menu> Import/Export to SD Card> Export from phone.  This way, you will be able to recover your contacts after a factory reset.

I also recommend that you call Customer Support to walk you through the process if you run into any trouble.  You can find their contact information in my above post.
