A Hard Reset restores the original factory settings and will erase all downloaded content, including ringtones, contacts stored in the handset memory, etc. It does not erase data stored on the SIM card or memory card (if available). Back up all necessary data on the device memory before proceeding by running a sync with the email accounts set up on the device (Home>Menu>Settings>Accounts & sync>Sync now).
Menu Path Method:
1. From the Home screen, press the Menu Button and select Settings.
2. Select Privacy.
3. Select Factory data reset.
4. Select Reset phone.
5. Select Erase everything.
6. The device will dump all of the data and reload.
Key Stroke Method
1. Power the device OFF.
2. Press the Volume Down and the Power Button until you see the white screen with the Android logos and text.
3. Press the Volume Down button to highlight Clear Storage.
4. Press the Power Button once and you should see a message stating “Delete all user Data?”
5. Press the Volume Up button and the Hard Reset process will begin.
6. The device will reboot once the process is complete.
· Note: This process can take several minutes to complete.

Is the Key Stroke method, perhaps without clearing storage and deleting user data, the way to get out of a memory problem created by an app? What I've done before is remove the battery, but this doesn't seem to be what I should do.
There doesn't seem to be a "Back up my data" option under the privacy area... I have a 8gb sd card installed and the sd is working fine.
Thats funny, I dont have that option anymore-looks like it was removed in the ship ROM...let me look around and see what I can find...
Yeah that's strange, please look into that. I would like to hard reset my device but don't want to with out being able to back it all up...
I wanted to do the Hard reset but unable to locate the back my data under privacy. My battery life is horrible and I read in this forum that hard reset might help. Thanks.
Looks like the Backup to SD Card was not part of the OS that AT&T decided to go with. I will Edit the instructions to reflect this.
Do you know of any good backup programs that would work well with the Aria since it was removed from the OS? We are having issues with sound on our Aria and we're thinking of doing a hard reset, but my son will lose everything he customized.... The device is JUST 30 days old; wondering if AT&T will replace it with a new one given its only 30 days old - if a hard reset doesnt' resolve it. thanks for the information, Nancy
Just wanted to let you know that we tried "MyBackup" and downloaded it from Android Marketplace; we did a backup; then a hard reset; then restore; it worked fairly well; however it did not restore the email setup configurations; or all of the apps that were previously downloaded and installed; it did restore the home screens; so I'd rate it at about 50/50... The program is free for 30 days and to purchase it is only $4.99...

Can you recommend a good backup program? Nancy1333 tried one and wasn't particularly satisfied. I see Sprite has an Android backup program, but the reviews aren't great either. Was the Backup that was going to be included a third party that we can obtain? I'm also looking for a File Explorer with similar functions to the WM FE.
I'm using File Manager by the Adao Team, and it has backup capability. I'm actually in the process of doing a hard reset, so I'll know in a couple of minutes if the backup/restore worked.

Please post your experiences with the File Manager when you have the time. A number of us are looking for some system tools that make manipulating Android a more reliable process.
Thanks!
I was going to ask how to back-up my Aria, but I guess others are asking as well! Is there any other way to back up the programs on the internal disk without an application? My HTC Sense keeps quiting on me and I want a reset, but I don't want to lose my programs!
@Rasar: how did the file manager by the Adao team work for you? You also said it had a backup capability. Please let us know your experiences with the program. How did the restore work? Did it restore everything or just some settings? Thank you, Nancy
I am also interested in how well it works... I have been using "On the Fly Backup" and am very happy with its ability to "restore" programs from a backup (using that one version of HTC Sync that allowed side-loading) but I don't think it will backup any options or settings if I update the ROM.
