it's starting to roll out via OTA in South East Asia... keep a look out for a notification on your phone we could be getting it soon here in the states....here is the post from HTC SEA website

Update – HTC Aria (Android 2.2) Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) update
Your phone will receive a notification of FOTA update when it is made available. Simply press OK to accept the update via a data connection such as Wi-Fi or GPRS/3G. After installing the update, you can confirm a successful update by confirming the Build number (From the Home Screen go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Software Information> Build number). The new Build number after the update will be 2.37.708.5. Update: Android 2.2 and HTC Sense update. Note：Please back up your data first before upgrading your phone. We recommend using a free Wi-Fi hotspot or an unlimited data plan to apply this update. If not, standard data connection charges may apply. For any questions, please contact us at http://www.htc.com/www/CA_Hotline.aspx

Be careful. The new hboot included in the froyo release will kill any chance of rooting your phone. This basically means that you will be stuck with what at&t wants you to have. So if you want to be free with your phone I recommend you go to xda and root your phone and install either Liberated FR008 which is htc sense 2.2 or CyanogenMod 6.1.0.

If I accept the OTA update, is it possible to then downgrade back to 2.1?

Also, what are the advantages to version 2.2 over 2.1? Speed? Features?

Please forgive my newbie-ness - I'm new to Android (coming from WM).

yea - i am already rooted - already have 2.2(3) on my phone, i can tether, hotspot, install external apps -

dont think i will go back to this :)

2.2 has enhancements that 2.1 didn't. It is better than 2.1. But if the update upgrades you hboot you will not be able to root your phone. It would be best to wait and see. Even if you root your phone and you want to return it you can flash back to 2.1 stock with the original att release ruu. When you root your phone you can install a custom version of froyo that isn't locked down. Like I've said before go to xda and do some research.

Can we have a forum mod or someone that works for HTC or ATT please confirm that the Aria will EVER receive 2.2 in the states? Not to be a damper, but I've been looking around, and it's rumored that ATT will NOT be allowing the update to 2.2. They are saying the phone can't handle it.

The HTC Aria is getting Android 2.2 eventually, because AT&T wouldn't of spent the time to update the Aria to enable FOTA. So that already gives the fact that the Aria WILL be getting Froyo, just not now.

Ok so some good news...really good news if you chose to believe it:-) lol..ill wait and see...so I called att and asked about cancelation fees to switch to another provider..and I told them why..because they are withholding 2.2 from us when pretty much every phone has 2.2 now...the lady put me on the phone with an ATT tech rep..."Steve Lewis" and he said very shortly within the next few days we will get an ota push from att with the 2.2 update...he was sure and promised it will be very soon...like I said whether you chose the believe it or not..well that's up to you...I'm hopping for a Christmas present from att in the form of a ota push lol...fingers crossed.

Well I talked to a tech from AT&T yesterday and he told me that he'd recommend installing the Froyo from the net instead of waiting for them. He said he did not see any Froyo update in the near future, although he did say it would come out at some point. Either your guy lied to you or the one I spoke with did not know what he was talking about. But regardless of who at AT&T was right, the fact is that we have no advantage in waiting for AT&T to provide us a ROM that will block all sorts of goodies. The guy at AT&T told me that even if I break my phone installing the update myself, it would still be covered under the warranty. So I went ahead and installed the Gratia ROM from the XDA folks and it works like a charm. I would recommend to install it yourself, just like the AT&T guy told me. Looks like it is not happening as fast as eevan was indicating.. what really irritates me on this type of issue, is that we cannot seem to get a straight answer from anywhere.. I can wait if I get a decent (honest) answer. Not knowing or smoke screens aggravate me!
