I'm not sure I completely understand your issue(s) but I'm going to try and help you out.

Settings >> Sound >> Phone ringtone >> Audio files

By following these steps you should see all audio files on your microSD card, even voice recordings and downloaded music.

I don't think you can add ringtones to the phone's memory, ALTHOUGH I have not tried so I can't be sure.

When you select "Phone ringtone"... you should see two selections : Phone ringtones and Audio files.  These two selections represent where the ringtones are located : either on the phone itself or on the microSD card.  Keep this in mind because if you use a ringtone on the microSD card and remove the card later, your phone may not ring when a call comes in.  When you select Audio files, simply scroll through your files until you find the name of the ringtone and select it.  YES, you need to know the name of the ringtone file.
